Goal: Saving time this school year

Today was THE day for my wife.

She’s a social studies teacher, and today was her first day back to school for teachers. Students are back on Wednesday.

She had to set the alarm for school for the first time since May. (Although I’m pretty sure she was already awake before it went off …)

🙋‍♀️ If you’re already back, I wish you a great start to your year!

🙋‍♀️ If you’re not, I hope you enjoy those last moments of summer!

This school year, I’d love to help you save time … time for what matters most.

Today, we’ll focus on creating online review games (like Kahoot!, Quizizz, etc.). Some new AI features in those tools are already huge time-savers …

… but not all of those AI time savers are free.

Below, I’ll also show you a FREE way to have AI generate questions for you — and add them to your review games quickly and easily.

Let’s get started!

😊 Prepare students for an AI future

The future is changing rapidly. AI is going to be a big part of it.

How do we prepare students for that future?

My book, AI for Educators, has a whole chapter about preparing students for an AI-integrated world — steps we can take now to start preparing students for their future.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Chock full of ideas, it is a great resource for educators at all levels who are curious about AI and it’s potential impact on teaching and learning. Highly recommend! — Dr. Todd Schmidt via Amazon

💡 THE BIG IDEA 💡

🤖 Use AI to create quick, easy review games

AI image created with Ideogram.ai

Online review games have gotten SO much better over the years.

I still remember the days of Jeopardy templates on PowerPoint.

And I was there for the first days of Kahoot! (and the amazed look in students’ — and teachers’ — eyes when they saw it for the first time).

But even recently, they’ve been sort of time-consuming to create. It’s great when you search and find one another teacher made that’s just right. But that doesn’t always happen.

AI is changing that.

⭐️ Several of my favorite review game platforms have adopted AI features to make game creation much faster and easier.

(Note that AI features in some platforms might require a paid premium account. But with most of them, you can use AI features — at least in limited fashion — with free accounts.)

And even if your game platform doesn’t have AI features, there’s this FREE option:

⭐️ You can write questions with an AI assistant like ChatGPT or Google Gemini and upload them with a spreadsheet. (I did this in my own classroom last spring and loved it.)

Here’s what you need to know to create online review games with the powers of AI:

AI features in Quizizz

Quizizz (quizizz.com) has been known for years as a great student-paced review game platform. Now their new AI features let you:

  • Extract questions from a worksheets and question banks

  • Create questions from documents, YouTube videos, websites, and online articles

  • Create questions from a topic, prompt or excerpt you provide

🤯 Even more mind blowing? You can take a picture of a document with the Quizizz app on your phone — and it’ll create a quiz from the content in it. (Download the app from your app store — or it’ll prompt you when you create a new quiz.)

You can find Quizizz AI features in the Quizizz AI button on the left side of the site — or by creating a new quiz.

AI features in Quizlet

The tried-and-true flashcard app, Quizlet (quizlet.com), creates student content and interacts using AI.

Study guide: Upload class notes, slides, or readings by pasting text, uploading a file, choosing a Google Drive file, or picking a YouTube video. You’ll get an outline, flashcards, sample essay questions, and an AI chat tutor for your notes.

Practice test: Create practice test questions based on learning materials. Upload a file, copy/paste text, or use a Quizlet flashcard set. It works best for past exams, study guides, and structured notes. It supports sciences and humanities subjects (math and foreign language are in progress). English only right now.

Q-Chat: This chatbot tutor uses a flashcard set and interacts with you, helping you study the material in the set.

Find these options in the “Generate” button at the top of the website or by scrolling down to “What’s new” after logging in.

AI features in Kahoot!

Kahoot!+ Max (paid: $9.99 USD/mo) offers AI question generators to create kahoots from a topic or a PDF upload.

Use QuestionWell

QuestionWell (questionwell.org) uses AI to create standards-aligned questions based on a file, text, website, or video. It creates multiple-choice questions for free — and fill-in-the-blank and short-answer questions with a paid plan.

You can export free multiple-choice questions (or paid FITB/SA questions) directly to all five review games mentioned here — Blooket, Gimkit, Quizizz, Quizlet, and Kahoot!.

FREE: AI questions to spreadsheet upload

With the following tools, you can use an AI assistant like ChatGPT or Google Gemini to create questions:

They all allow for bulk uploading questions and answers with a spreadsheet.

Just use the AI assistant to make the questions. Then copy to the spreadsheet template and upload to the review game platform.

Thankfully, it’s not too tricky — and adding AI-generated questions like this can save you time (and money from paid premium plans).

1. Get the bulk uploading spreadsheet from the review game platform you want to use. You’ll use this spreadsheet as a template to upload your questions.

2. Open the spreadsheet and look at the columns. You’ll want to know the order of the columns, like: question, answer 1, answer 2, answer 3, correct answer, etc.

3. Create questions with an AI assistant like ChatGPT or Google Gemini. You can also use other services like Diffit, Brisk Teaching, SchoolAI and MagicSchool to create questions.

I wanted some questions about definite/indefinite articles for my Spanish students. Here’s the prompt I used in Google Gemini (edit bold parts to customize):

Create a set of 10 multiple-choice questions for beginning Spanish students that let them practice the correct definite and indefinite article. Format this activity in a table with the following columns. Question; Possible Choice 1; Possible Choice 2; Possible Choice 3; Possible Choice 4; Number of Correct Answer

Remember: patience! With AI assistants, they don’t always get it right the first time — and they don’t always give them same types of results every time. If it isn’t perfect the first time, just tell it what you need different.

4. Export or copy the results into the spreadsheet template. In Google Gemini, you can export the table to Sheets, which makes it easy to copy/paste over to the spreadsheet template.

You can always copy/paste from the AI assistant directly into the spreadsheet template, but I feel I have greater control copying from a sheet to a sheet.

Make sure everything lines up correctly in the right columns.

5. Upload your spreadsheet to your review game platform.

  • Blooket: Find the CSV importer when you click the “Create” button

  • Gimkit: Create a new “kit” and choose “Import from Spreadsheet” from the question menu

  • Quizizz: Create a new assessment; choose “Import worksheets/questions”; use the “Spreadsheet” tab

  • Quizlet: Create a new flashcard set and use the “Import” button to copy/paste results … OR use the Generate button and choose Study Guides or Practice Test

  • Kahoot!: Create a new quiz; choose “Add question”; choose “Import spreadsheet”

Tips for success:

  • Experiment with different AI assistants (ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Anthropic Claude).

  • Experiment with different teacher AI tools (SchoolAI, MagicSchool, Diffit, Brisk Teaching, etc.).

  • With some AI assistants, you can upload files (learning resources like notes, texts, etc.). Upload and ask for questions.

  • The more specific on the types of questions you ask for, the better.

  • Don’t cram too much into one prompt. If you want different types of questions, you might ask the AI assistant in separate prompts. Example: I asked for direct/indirect articles in one prompt, but I asked a separate time for questions about changing verbs into the preterite tense.

📺 New TEDx Talk about student-centered learning

Student-centered learning empowers students. It’s effective.

I’ve ALWAYS been a fan of her approach to blended learning and station rotation model in her own classroom.

She recently presented a TEDx Talk about her passion: student-centered learning. It’s great!

🎁 BONUS: She created a great 10-page workbook for teachers who watch the video … and it’s free!

Here’s an AI-generated summary of the talk:

In a thought-provoking TED Talk, educator Dr. Catlin Tucker challenges the traditional teacher-centered classroom model. She argues that in today's world, where students have unprecedented control over information consumption, schools need to adapt. Dr. Tucker proposes a shift to student-centered learning, where students actively participate in setting goals, assessing their work, and collaborating with peers.

While acknowledging the challenges of implementing such a change, Dr. Tucker highlights the immense benefits of empowering students to take ownership of their learning. Students who are in charge of their education are more engaged, motivated, and develop crucial skills that prepare them for the future.
