⚖️ How educators are setting AI policy

Plus a new template and more resources!

🤖 What’s your school/district doing about AI?

If your school/district is like lots of others I’ve encountered, the answer is “not much.”

Lots of places haven’t addressed it as an organization.

There is no policy in place.

Any internet filtering decisions are done with little transparency.

And teachers aren’t getting AI-specific professional development.

Thankfully, you’re in luck! Here in the newsletter, we’re sharing AI-related resources to keep you up to date — and help you think through tough decisions.

And in today’s big idea, you’ll find some gems from our free AI for Admins community (which you can join!).

👓 Psst: My new AI keynote, “Tomorrow Glasses” …

I’ve been presenting keynote speeches to inform, encourage, and inspire educators about AI for about a year.

The title: “Tomorrow Glasses.” We can’t look at our classes and schools through our “today glasses” any longer. We must use our “tomorrow glasses”!

The more I present this speech, the more I learn about what really resonates with educators. I’ve revised and revamped the speech a few times as I get new ideas — and as AI develops.

I’m about to perform version 4.0 — the best version so far! — in a couple weeks.

Want to bring me to your school, district, or event to perform my “Tomorrow Glasses” keynote? Email [email protected] for details, pricing, and availability.

💡 THE BIG IDEA 💡

⚖️ How educators are setting AI policy

School leaders have been wrestling with AI issues for more than a year now. (For some, it’s been for years.)

What place does artificial intelligence have in learning?

What’s appropriate for students — and how do we keep it appropriate?

What institutional policies should be put in place?

Conversations are happening in school conference rooms, at teacher conferences, and in digital spaces.

One of those spaces is our AI for Admins community. It’s for anyone participating in leadership conversations about AI in schools, school districts and education.

The conversations and resources shared have been invaluable.

If you want to join the AI for Admins community, you can join for free here. (Know someone who might like to join? Forward them this email!)

Below are some of my favorite comments and resources on setting AI policy in schools and districts:

  • Our district used TCEA's 9 step process to develop our AI Responsible Use Policy and it has been foundational to our AI policy framework. I highly recommend it as a starting place/reflection. — Denis Wisner

  • There are some who believe (for a number of reasons) that AI has no place in the education system, but I (passionately, but respectfully) disagree. School is exactly the place where students should learn about these technologies and the role they play in their daily lives, including in the future workforce. Sending students into the world without providing a solid foundation in information, media, and digital literacies would be a huge injustice that fails to adequately prepare them for the workforce, but perhaps even more importantly, fails to provide them with the knowledge and skills they need to protect themselves in the Digital Age. — Kris Armijo

  • Has everyone seen what the California Department of Education has developed regarding the role of AI in California K-12 Schools? It’s impressive! — Kim Brown

  • We've adjusted our "Academic Honesty" policy to include specific references to AI. This allows teachers to define the "acceptable" level of use of AI tools within their classroom, but requires that they communicate their expectations clearly to students. We felt putting this decision in our teachers' hands was a good way to help bridge the varying levels of comfort that exist across our teaching staff (and allows teachers to adjust their expectations as they gain understanding/comfort). — David Lapetino

🗄 Template

Teach Curation Creation Retrieval with the Top 3 template

There's something that just clicks with our brains and lists. We love a good list, and we love to know exactly how many things are on those lists and why!

That’s why this top 3 graphic organizer is so versatile. Students can use this graphic organizer in a variety of ways such as:

  • Recall the top 3 things you remember from a lesson you just studied.

  • Give your top 3 tips to others in your situation.

  • Name your top 3 people in order and explain your ranking.

  • Remember your top 3 favorite moments of the school year.

  • Pick your top 3 favorite healthy foods.

  • Tell the top 3 favorite things about a classmate.

  • Summarize your top 3 favorite moments about a book you just read.

  • Give the top 3 reasons a classmate should or shouldn't do something.

🚀 Take it to the next level
