๐ New ideas to create classroom buzz
How do we know whatโs going to capture studentsโ attention?
Maybe we just need to ASK.
For years, Iโve given out a student interest survey at the beginning of the school year.
But now that we have the power of AI โฆ
โฆ we can take a GOOD idea, turn it into a BETTER idea โฆ
โฆ and then make it into the BEST idea. (Youโll see what I mean below.)

๐ Link a text to highlight โ If you want to send students or colleagues to a specific spot on a website in Chrome just highlight the text then right-click and click the link to text. This creates a link to that exact spot when it's clicked.
๐Project ideas for any novelโ TCEA shared a graphic created by Merideth Dobbs with over 15 different fun activities you could use with any book you read as a class or students read independently.
๐ฅ Create a โTips and Tricksโ video as a genius hour activity โ Use the fascination students have with TikTok and YouTube to your advantage. Have students create their own Tips and Tricks video about something they love. They can share it with their classmates and get feedback. Itโs a great activity to work on planning, writing, and speaking.

๐ก THE BIG IDEA ๐ก
๐ณ๏ธ Student interest surveys + assignments = FUN
Brace yourself: Youโre about to get (what I think are) a good idea, a better idea, and a BEST idea.
๐ Good idea: Have students fill out a student interest survey. These surveys are full of all sorts of fun questions that help you get to know your students. (Examples: favorite movies, favorite foods, family traditions, future aspirations, etc.)
Why? To get to know students. To build relevance. To build relationships.
These can be done in a simple Google Form (or even paper).
Our post โ Student interest surveys to connect learning to their world โ has a template you can copy. It also has a bunch of questions you can use.
๐ Better idea: Use AI to help with lesson plan ideas to make class more relevant to students. Ask an AI assistant like ChatGPT, Google Gemini (the new name for Google Bard) or Microsoft Copilot for ideas.
๐ BEST idea: Take what students tell you on their student interest surveys. Bring it to an AI assistant and ask AI for ways to incorporate those student interests into teaching and learning.
Example: In your surveys, you have several students tell you theyโre into Fortnite. Ask an AI assistant for connections you can make to Fortnite with your content. (Possible important first step: Ask AI to tell you what Fortnite is and some details about it.)
Important note: Donโt pretend to be something youโre not. If AI gives you some great ideas, donโt take them and pretend to be an expert at that student interest. Be transparent โ and let students tell you if the AI was on point with its suggestions.
โก๏ธ What to do next: Create a student interest survey to give your students โฆ
โฆ OR take something you KNOW students are interested in and ask an AI assistant for ideas to incorporate it into a lesson about (insert topic).
Tried it? Hit reply and let me know how it goes!

โ Oops, we canโt unsend this email ๐ซฃโ
I get a lot of emails so itโs easy to miss things. But that headline, from Quizizz, caught my eye.
Why? Because I know the feeling of wanting to unsend an email. And also because I really wanted to know what it was they didnโt mean to send accidentally on purpose.
๐ง Teaching email etiquette
As adults, we read and write a lot of emails. However, for most of us we didnโt start using electronic communication until we were already out of school.
Not so for students these days. If they need to communicate something to their teacher they often use email. But whoโs teaching them HOW to write one?
โ Answer: Quizizz!
๐กIdeas for using this template in class:
Edit the template to fit your class adding names of teachers or admin to questions.
Use the questions as discussion prompts for students.
After students complete the quiz ask them to create their own โemail etiquetteโ rubric for future use.
